Stupid Laws
‘Stupid Laws’ is a photo-essay breaking as many of the most obsurd/outdated laws that still remain.
It focuses around one central character’s day from start to finish and the escapades that she gets up to on the way.
One such example of these laws is the ‘suspicious salmon act’. According to Section 32 of the Salmon Act of 1986 it is illegal to handle a salmon in ‘suspicious circumstances’.

No Public Washing
According to Chapter 22B, Article 3 (North Carolina) it is reasonable for land owners to put restrictions on the installation, placement or use of a clothesline outdoors at a single-family dwelling or on the ground floor of a multi-unit residential building. This includes errecting a clothes line over a public road.
Carrying a Plank Along the Pavement
According to Section 54 of the Metropolitan Act 1839, it is illegal to “roll or carry any cask, tub, hoop or wheel or any ladder, plank, pole, showboard or placard upon any footway, except for the purpose of unloading any cart or carriage, or of crossing the footway’. The maximum fine is £500.
Do not Import Polish Potatoes
According to the Polish Potato Order of 2004 it is illegal for any person to ‘import into England potatoes which he knows to be or has reasonable cause to suspect to be polish potatoes’.
